Product details
PMMA, known as acrylic, is a rigid, transparent thermoplastic with outstanding light transmission (92%), excellent UV resistance, good surface hardness, and high gloss. It is lighter and more impact resistant than glass but scratches more easily. Applications include car taillights, signage, LED lenses, aquariums, and aircraft windows. Modification improves PMMA: impact-modified PMMA (e.g., with rubber additives) increases toughness for motorcycle windscreens and furniture. Heat-resistant PMMA grades (up to 100°C continuous) are used for automotive exterior lenses. UV-absorber-containing PMMA protects substrates in greenhouse panels and displays. Anti-reflective and anti-fog coated PMMA is used for medical devices and optical filters. Light-diffusing PMMA grades create uniform backlighting for displays. Scratch-resistant hard-coated PMMA is a glass substitute for touch panels and watch faces. PMMA can be extruded into rods, sheets, and fibers (optical fibers). It is easily laser engraved and edge-lit for signage. PMMA’s weatherability far exceeds most clear plastics, making it the choice for outdoor glazing and automobile rear lights.
