PEI is an amorphous high-performance thermoplastic with excellent heat resistance (glass transition temperature ~217°C), high strength, inherent flame retardancy ( V-0 with low smoke), and good chemical resistance. It has outstanding electrical insulation properties. Typical applications include aircraft interiors, medical sterilization trays, electrical connectors, and microwave components. Modification enhances PEI: glass fiber reinforced PEI (10-40%) increases stiffness and creep resistance for structural brackets and industrial oven parts. Carbon fiber reinforced PEI provides high strength and electrical conductivity for EMI shielding. High-flow PEI grades enable thin-wall molding for electronics. Transparent amber PEI (unfilled) is used for semiconductor test sockets and chemical sight glasses. Medical-grade PEI withstands over 1000 steam autoclave cycles for reusable surgical instruments. Food contact approved PEI is used for catering trays and beverage dispensing components. PEI is also available as 3D printing filament . Low-outgassing PEI grades are specified for aerospace and vacuum chamber applications.
