PE is the most widely used thermoplastic, available in densities: HDPE (rigid, strong), LDPE (flexible, clear), LLDPE (tough), and UHMWPE (extremely wear resistant). PE has excellent chemical resistance, low moisture absorption, and good electrical insulation. Applications include pipes, bottles, films, cable insulation, and geotextiles. Modification extends PE: Glass fiber reinforced PE increases stiffness but is less common; instead, mica or talc fillers provide modulus for structural foam. Flame-retardant PE grades are used for cable jacketing in mass transit. Anti-static and conductive PE (carbon black loaded) is used for fuel tanks and electronics packaging. UV-stabilized PE is essential for agricultural films, outdoor furniture, and plastic lumber. UHMWPE modified with lubricants provides ultra-low friction for chain guides and material handling. Rotomolding grades produce large tanks and playground equipment.
